MLM Prospecting

The key elements to MLM Prospecting are as follows:

1. Initial contact (this is covered in the MLM Lead Generation section)

2. Build a relationship (you may already have a relationship, as in your warm market)

3. Communicate your opportunity to them

Obviously, each one of these steps involves many possible avenues, and each of those could have an entire course built around it! However, if you keep some guiding principles in mind at all times, the entire process becomes natural and straight-forward, without anyone needing to feel uncomfortable. The discomfort sets in when there is any unnatural "selling" taking place, either from you (because you are focused on selling, and the money that you will make) or from your unwitting prospect (who hates being sold, especially from someone who is uncomfortable).  Don’t be this guy!:

The awkwardness of the whole process can be removed simply: DON’T DO THIS!  Instead, follow the golden rule of marketing: FOCUS ON THE OTHER PERSON. Be aware of their unique situation and problems, and recommend your product or opportunity to them, as a friend, as a solution to their problems. If what you have is not a fit, or they are not the right person, or you don’t have an established relationship with them yet, DON’T offer what you have. Just say NO!

Now, depending on how you are meeting this person, it may be appropriate to talk to them about your opportunity sooner rather than later (say, if you were advertising to attract this person to you and your business). Even in this case though, you should never be "selling". You should be connecting with them by asking questions and learning about their situation, establish rapport, and then educating them in ways that are relevant to them about what you have.

The other principle to keep in mind is that all marketing should be done in a strategic, narrowly targeted way that solves a specific problem. In this manner, marketing efforts are as fruitful as possible, and we are rewarded for serving others well. If we are not specific, our efforts end up being haphazzard and ruled by chance.

To learn more about the art of relationship building and effective communicating as it relates to network marketing or MLM I highly recommend two training resources. Click on the images below for more information. The first below is a $27 e-book by Mark Wieser, who was the top recruiter in his company for 18 months following the principles in that guide. At one point, he sponsored over 250 people into his group in one year! The second gives an hour interview between Mike Dillard and Mark Wieser. That is an excellent resource, and includes a more detailed training program available for purchase if you really want to master the topic of prospecting.
